History

Romans were the first that overthrown migrated Indo-European tribes from Italy during the 3rd century B.C. By 264 BC and for the next seven centuries all Italy was under the leadership of Rome. Until the 4th and 5th centuries A.D, where barbaric invasions destroyed the Western Roman Empire, history of Italy is actually the history of Rome. From 800 A.D on Italy was fragmented with numerous city- states and many small principalities, which flourished in the late Middle Ages. After 1800, Italy was unified by Napoléon, who crowned himself king of Italy in 1805. But in 1815, Austria by becoming the dominant power of the country disunited Italy. In 1861 Victor Emmanuel II, king of Sardinia, was proclaimed king of Italy and with the annexation of Venetia in 1866 and of papal Rome in 1870 the unification of Italy into one nation under a constitutional monarchy was completed. Today, Italy is a democratic republic and one the richest countries in the world. It is a founding member of the European Union and member of G8. Since 2007, it is also a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.
