Tourist Guide Budapest

Tourist Guide BudapestArriving in Budapest you will soon understand that you have to make a choice out of the rich offer of sights to see and things to do. Budapest is one of the few cities with two World Heritage Sites. Besides that its proud of the nearly one hundred thermal springs and 12 spa's, where Roman ruins, Turkish baths are still in use and the heritage of the Gothic, Baroque and rich Art Nouveau architectural masterpieces at display make the city a living painting. Visiting Budapest will be the experience of perfect coffees with pies in the morning, exploring well preserved cultural and historical landmarks in combination with the ultimate relaxation therapy in one of its many spa's. Please make notice before visiting one of the spa's if they have special opening times for men and women. We advise you to get a first taste of the city by visiting one of many Budapests historic coffee houses in the center. At the turn of the 20th century Budapest was famous for its coffee culture. Get into the rhythm of the city while enjoying a coffee, the fine interior and eating a delicious traditional pie. This is the perfect place to contemplate your visit to this culturally and historically rich city.

All the famous sites are located around the Danube. To enjoy Budapest to the maximum we advise you to combine cultural and historical strolls with a reviving visit to a nearby spa. Take a day to visit the Buda Castle, is the most famous site together with The Royal Palace, where many wars and battles took place. From the Fishermen’s Bastion you have a marvellous view. The nearby Gellert Baths offer you the opportunity to relax your feet and body. The thermal baths and hotel were built in 1918 and is without doubt the most beautiful bathing complex in Budapest. In the evening a walk over the bridge gives a beautiful view over the city with its lights reflecting along the river. The largest building in the country, the Parliament, is located next to the Danube. The building can be visited by tourists since 2000. After this visit we advise you visit The Széchenyi Baths. The largest bath complex in Europe but also the most pleasant baths in the capital. The experience can be described as having a bath at the palace of a royal family. The most famous characteristic features of the baths are the groups playing chess, submerged in the steaming water up to their necks, as well as the outdoor pools embraced by the beautiful building.

Lifestyle Budapest

To get a taste of living in Budapest you can take a stroll through Váci Street with its many shops and reach the ever-buzzing Budapest Central Market Hall. Here the citizens of Budapest buy there fresh fruits and vegetables, but also meats and other delicacies. The building is more than 100 years old and always decorated with paprika garlands and strings of garlic. At any time of the year a visit to one of Budapests big parks is a great choice. Especially the one on Margaret Island, which is full of joggers, bicycles, has a small lake to rent a small boat and a huge summer swimmingpool complex. The former water tower is a UNESCO protected monument and is now an unusual exhibition space. The open-air theatre is a popular venue for performances of opera and ballet in the summer months.

For dinner you can try Hungarian cuisine, which is influenced by French cuisine and tastes from the East.  Hotels in Budapest offer local dishes in  good prices! At night Budapest is a beautiful city to walk around, as many buildings are lighted. If you're up to it there awaits you Budapests buzzing nightlife. Both Liszt Ferenc Square (near the Oktogon) and Ráday utca are places full of bars, restaurants and intimate little cafés that appeal particularly to young people. Most are open until one or two in the morning. Budapest also has its own Moulin Rouge (VI. Nagymező u. 17), which hosts revue, cabaret and is open until four in the morning.

Transportation

Its easy to get around in Budapest. The public transport system consists of buses, trolleybuses, trams, metro and ground suburban trains (HÉV). Buses, trams and trolleybuses run daily from 4.30 a.m. until 11.0 p.m. The three underground metro lines run on a 2 min to 15 min at night interval service schedule. Tickets have to be bought before boarding one of the transport systems and they are valid for one single journey of any length (without changing) on nearly all routes. It is easiest to purchase a value-for-money pass, which allows you to use the public transport system as much as you want (available for 1 or 3 days). New tickets always have to be validated at the beginning of each journey. Budapest is famous for its many ticket inspectors, which can be wearing uniform or be plain-clothed, but always wear a red armband and carry a photographic identification badge.

Taxis are an alternative to travel. They can be recognized by their yellow number plates and a taxi sign in yellow. Tariffs are clearly displayed on the rear right door and on the dashboard. All cars must have a taximeter installed, and these also print out a receipt. Tipping: in general 10% of the fare. Be careful when taking a taxi from the airport. The fare of taxi drivers waiting in the arrivals hall are considerably higher than permitted. If you want go into town by taxi, we advise you to take one of the Zóna taxis (365-5555) waiting outside the airport, which operate on a fixed fare system for four zones between the airport and the city center. Tariffs vary between HUF 3000–4300 (€14–20). New in Budapest are the several biking routes in and around the center. Ask your hotel for the possibilities of renting a bike.
