The Medieval City of Rhodes is a spectacular part of the island that you can’t miss. Its gothic style and architecture will capture your imagination. Moreover, the Old Town of Rhodes is perfectly preserved and had been assigned as UNESCO’s world cultural heritage monument. Walk along the famous Knights’ Street (odhos Ippoton) and visit the Clock Tower, once used as lookout post. The gothic church of Panaghia Bourgou and the Suleyman Mosque should also be among your first choices should you walk around the Old Town. Last but not least, do not forget to visit the areas of Lindos and Mandraki. One of the island's greatest claims to fame has tragically disappeared (and in fact may not ever have existed!). The Colossus of Rhodes was reputedly built astride the harbour of Mandraki in 305 BC. The bronze statue of the island's sun god Helios stood 32 metres high and took 12 years to build.

Getting around

You can reach Rhodes by plane from Athens or Thessaloniki and by boat from Piraeus harbor. Ferry connections are also available from Thessaloniki and many other islands of the Aegean such as Kos, Naxos, Syros, Lesvos, Crete, Hios and Samos. Small planes connect Rhodes with Mykonos, Santorini, Crete, Karpathos, Kasos and Kastellorizo. The island has an international airport at Paradisi 16 kilometres west of the town. There are regular Olympic Airways flights to and from Athens. For your transportation within the island you can use buses and mini trains.
