Ecotourism

Wednesday, 25 August 2010 13:11

Ecotourism and cities are a difficult match as ecotourism can be defined as “Responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people.” (TIES, 1990). However as the need and demand of more conscience travellers for more awareness about green travelling increases, we offer you information to minimise the impact of recreational travelling and maximise the experience of your trip.

We, Bookingspace.com, as a worldwide provider of online hotel and flight reservations, understand the necessity of a change or mindset. Also from you, our most demanding visitors, we get more and more requests to incorporate information about eco-friendly facts that contributes to travelers' decision making by providing hotels that make an effort to minimise the impact on the environment, restaurants that offer organic-biological menu's, eco-shops, transportation or events that can open your mind.

Green travel tips

Here are a few simple ways you can help conserve fuel and energy when you travel:

  • You can help neutralising your carbon emission from every time you travel by so called 'carbon offsetting': contributing money to organisations that invest in green projects. Before buying carbon offset credits, just make sure that you're using a reputable company, one with a proven program that invests in renewable energy. Reliable carbon offset companies include Carbonfund (www.carbonfund.org), TerraPass (www.terrapass.org), and Carbon Neutral (www.carbonneutral.org).

  • Choose nonstop flights whenever you can. They use less fuel than indirect flights since landing and take off takes a lot of fuel. Try to fly during the day. Scientists say that nighttime flights are twice as harmfull for the environment. And pack light -- each 15 pounds of luggage on a 5,000-mile flight adds up to 50 pounds of carbon dioxide emitted.

  • Where you stay during your travels can have a major environmental impact. Find out how the hotel or appartment that you are staying manages its trash disposal, recycling, water conservation and energy use. Read at our citybreaks and the eco travel section about hotels that make an effort to minimise environmental impact. You can look for Green Key certification, which is an international eco-label for tourism products (greenkey.org).

  • At hotels, request that your sheets and towels not be changed daily. (Many hotels already have programs like this in place.) Turn off the lights and air conditioner (or heater) when you leave your room.

  • Use public transport where possible -- trains, buses, and even taxis are more energy-efficient forms of transport than driving. Even better is to walk or cycle; you'll produce zero emissions and stay fit and healthy on your travels.

  • If renting a car is necessary, ask the rental agent for a hybrid, or rent the most fuel-efficient car available. You'll use less gas and save money at the tank.

  • Eat at locally owned and operated restaurants that use produce grown in the area. This contributes to the local economy and cuts down on greenhouse gas emissions by supporting restaurants where the food is not flown or trucked in across long distances.

Summer in Corfu

Monday, 10 May 2010 19:21

This summer visit Corfu and discover its unique bays, villages and resorts. In particular, Kalami bay is set nestling below the North East Corfu hills and famous for the Durrel's 'White House' and beautiful beach. Kalami is a popular destination for couples and also suits a family holiday. Kassiopi is another great choice as it is a charming little fishing village, with a traditional port. Tourism has of course had its influence, but you can still find local fishermen bringing home the morning catch down at the harbour. Roda, a Corfufishing village with a small family beach resort, is another ideal place. Sidari is ideal for families looking for a package holiday. The resort is much larger than Roda. There are several beaches and many lively activities.

Continue your exploration in Agios Stephanos, a small fishing village, located on the North East coast of Corfu. This little fishing village has now become a very popular resort with many stylish villas for rent. The resort of Arillas is quiet and mainly for families and couples. Of course, do not miss Paleokastritsa, which is famous for being Corfu's most treasured beauty spot. For a stunning sandy beach - probably the finest the island has to offer - then Glyfada should be on your list. There are several bars and tavernas around Glyfada beach as well as the usual hotels and a few apartments. Last but not least, Kaminaki is one of Corfu's best kept secrets. The bay is a beautiful well kept secret with sparkling white pebbles and a turquoise water gently lapping against the beach. It is almost a dream and probably the one that many of us have when we picture a small Greek holiday destination.

Travel to Paros

Saturday, 08 May 2010 11:50

The island group of Paros- Antiparos lies roughly at the center of the Cyclades, between Naxos  to the East, Mykonos, Syros, Tinos and Andros to the North, Sifnos  and Milos to the SW and Serifos to the West, Ios and Santorini to the South and 90 nautical miles from Piraeus.

Throughout the summer there are about six Olympic Airways daily flights to Paros, with a flight time of 45 minutes. The airport is 9 kilometers away from Parikia (or Paroikia) and Olympic Airways buses transport passengers into town.

Five to eight boats ply from Paros to Piraeus (Pireas) daily during the summer months. The trip takes about five hours. The island is also linked with many other islands with frequent departures during the summer season. Also there are 10-15 boats plying from Paros to Antiparos daily.

There are several activities that Paros is suitable for (watersports the most) like windsurfing, diving, sailing, fishing, horseback riding, mountain bike and trekking.

Start your night in Mykonos at Astra Bar, which  is the hora's coolest venue and the candlelit terrace is bordered by bougainvillea and a whitewashed chapel. DJs spin an eclectic mixture of jazz, world and house as sophisticates drink bellinis and cosmopolitans (€15).

Live music
For deliciously camp cabaret go to Montparnasse Piano Bar (22890 23719, 24 Agion Anargyron Street), where the American songbook is performed to rapturous applause.

Clubs
Space Dance (22890 24100, Lakka) opens at midnight but the party doesn't start till 2am. Podium dancers whip up the 20-something hordes, as the techno tunes build. Dress as bare as you dare, or play it safe in T-shirt and jeans. Entrance €20.

An older, moneyed crowd sways to laid-back beats at El Pecado on the harbour. The gothic chic of the interior gives way to tea-lights and sofas on the terraces.

Ibiza veterans can join the stilt-walkers and fire-eaters at the Paradise Club (694 357 3016 ) on Paradise Beach. Bikini-clad babes and bronzed boys dance to pumping house anthems around the pool. Entrance €15.

Berlin is the largest city in Germany and it is best known for its historical associations as the German capital. It offers a wonderful combination of history, night life, architecture and culture. Berlin has modest beginnings, but over time it grew into a European powerhouse and since reunification in 1990 it became into a dynamic and creative city. Berlin has wonderful sights although it is not as centralized or small as other European cities. It is also known as one of the greenest cities in Europe: over 60% of its surface area is either a park or a river, it is beautiful! Berlin is also an industrial city; key industries such as electronics, manufacturing and information technology reflect the hopes for a brighter future for the city.
